ABSTRACT
The Latin word nova, meaning `new', was applied historically to the sudden appearance of a bright star, not previously recorded. Such novae stellae appear in Eastern records from about 1500 BC and in European records in the past three centuries (many, however, are ancient SUPERNOVAE)
