ABSTRACT

Among the small bodies of the solar system, comet Ikeya-Seki—the Great Comet of 1965—is an outstanding object for more than one reason. It belongs to an exceptional class of comets, the Kreutz sungrazing group, an ensemble so called because its members have extremely small closest approach distances, thus brushing the Sun at perihelion (see COMETS: KREUTZ SUNGRAZING)
