Born in Laneast, Cornwall, England, he became fellow and mathematical tutor at Cambridge. He developed a procedure for numerical integration of differential equations and, inspired by MARY SOMERVILLE, he deduced mathematically the existence and location of the planet Neptune from its perturbations on the planet Uranus
