Greek philosopher, born in Miletus, pupil of ANAXIMANDER. The first Greek to distinguish clearly between planets and stars, Anaximenes conceived the idea that the stars were fixed like nails on a crystalline sphere, which he apparently believed was a hemisphere and rotated like a hat on a head
