Dutch astronomer, worked at Harvard and directed the Mount Stromlo Observatory (near Canberra, Australia). Studied the structure and evolution of star clusters and the Galaxy, mapping the spiral arms of the Milky Way, especially the Carina region, and the Magellanic Clouds
