Mathematician, librarian, priest, born in Loudun, France. In 1645 he published Astronomia Philolaica which, on the basis of elliptical orbits for planets and Kepler's laws, suggested that the force which attracted planets to the Sun should vary inversely as the square of the distance (JOHANNES KEPLER had claimed inversely as the first power)
