Brisbane, Thomas Makdougall (1773–1860)

Soldier and astronomer, born in Largs, North Ayrshire, Scotland. After a distinguished army career, he became Governor of New South Wales (1821), initiating largely unsuccessful experiments to introduce tobacco, coffee, cotton and flax to Australia
