ABSTRACT
British astronomer, worked at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, as Chief Assistant (assistant director) before succeeding Airy as Astronomer Royal (director) in 1881. Turned the Royal Observatory towards astrophysics (as opposed to positional astronomy). He installed large collecting area telescopes (e.g. the 28 in refractor, still in operation, used originally for double star observations)
