ABSTRACT

An English amateur, Common made several large telescopes, and in 1881–2 used his 36 in telescope to photograph Comet 1881b and, for the first time, the Orion Nebula. It was immediately apparent that long exposures, which could accumulate the light of faint stars, opened out the field of astronomical research.
