Possibly a journalist and certainly an amateur astronomer. Born in Redpost, Somerset, England. The spectacular meteor storm of 1866, and a fireball in 1869, focused his interest on meteor astronomy. In 1877 he demonstrated a steady night by night movement in the Perseid meteor radiant, which proved that meteors came from showers of dust distributed along the path of a comet
