ABSTRACT
The 100 m diameter radio telescope has been operated by the MAX-PLANCK-INSTITUT FÜR RADIOASTRONOMIE since 1972 near Effelsberg, Germany. The telescope is fully steerable and its pioneering `homologous' design minimizes elevation-dependent gravitational deformations, enabling routine observations to wavelengths as short as 6 mm
