Ecliptic

A great circle on the celestial sphere which represents the apparent annual path of the Sun in its motion relative to the background stars. It is so called because eclipses can occur when the Moon crosses it. Due to the motion of the Earth around the Sun, the Sun appears to move across the celestial sphere, completing one full circuit in a year
