The astronomical unit (abbreviation: AU), is also described as the `mean' distance between the Earth and the Sun, where `mean' in this context refers to the average of the maximum (aphelion) and minimum (perihelion) distances between the Earth and the Sun. The currently accepted value for the astronomical unit is 149 597 870 km.
