Bell, Susan Jocelyn [name following her marriage Burnell, or Bell-Burnell] (1943–)

Radioastronomer, born in York, England. She studied at Glasgow and Cambridge, where in 1967 she was a research student working with ANTHONY HEWISH on a radioastronomy project on interplanetary scintillation. She noticed an unusually regular signal, shown to be bursts of radio energy at a constant interval of just over a second—the first pulsar
