Instrument-maker and astronomer, born in Portland, ME. Massachusetts businessman, first (unpaid) director of the Harvard College Observatory, with its magnificent 15 in telescope. He identified Saturn's innermost Crêpe Ring. Independently of William Lassell, he discovered the seventh satellite of Saturn, Hyperion, with his son George Bond (the observatory's second director)
