Charge-coupled devices (CCDs) were first introduced to the amateur astronomer in the early 1990s and soon proved to be a valuable tool for imaging the night sky (see CCD IMAGING). The first CCDs available were typically very small (just a few millimeters across) and presented many challenges when it came to locating objects in the sky
