ABSTRACT

This paper aims to identify similarities in the ways of experiencing the spaces under the Sant Adrià Viaduct, located in the homonymous city, on the outskirts of Barcelona, and the João Goulart elevated highway, in the central region of São Paulo, appreciating that the barriers resulting from the viaducts reveal different dynamics and that the spaces under them can act as connections between the surrounding urban meshes. The study of the social, material and production dimensions comprises the methodological approach employed through the study of urban morphology and the presence of quality attributes of public spaces. The article demonstrates, conclusively, that the viaducts both fragment and structure the urbanization in these cities and that the spaces under these viaducts preserve an important urbanity, expressed by the daily dynamics of the place and urban form materiality, acting as urban bridges to segregated regions.
