ABSTRACT

The internet of things refers to a system of interrelated, internet-connected objects that can collect and transfer data over a wireless network without human intervention. The personal, business, and industrial possibilities are virtually endless. The motivation was to incorporate the concept of internet of things in industry by designing a 3D printer workstation that is IoT enabled to be used remotely; one that is designed around principles and a framework that enables it to be industry scalable and serve as a demonstration of concept for total IoT enabled industry under the banner of Industry 4.0. A comprehensive framework was designed using Amazon Web Service services and OctoPrint wireless 3D printer driver to enable the 3D printer to be connected to the World Wide Web, to be controlled and monitored wirelessly. The framework allows for multiple users to register onto the network through their PCs, enabling them to use the 3D printer or several devices as such in remote location(s) from the perspective of each individual user; thus, allowing for the creation of a wireless network of machines and PCs that can be integrated in industry. The ultimate vision of this research is to establish inter machine communication for optimized industrial manufacturing and quality control.
