ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the design and manufacturing processes involved in the manufacturing of a small-scale ring spinning machine in detail. A ring spinning machine is a type of spinning machine that turns loose fibers into thread. This chapter discusses the design, manufacturing, and interfacing of a sustainable ring spinning machine to achieve the main design considerations namely sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and enabling “small and mid-size enterprises (SME)”. The machine achieved a high-cost efficiency and sustainability. Cost-effectiveness can be attributed to a hybrid sourcing strategy of parts that used in-house manufacturing and outsourcing. A complete cost analysis was carried out considering the manufacturing and operational costs and compared with similar models available in the market. The sustainability analysis was also carried out by calculating the carbon emissions in various stages of the development of the machine.
