ABSTRACT

The Kandi region of Punjab is located in the northeastern to southeastern portion of the state. It covers 8 per cent of the total area of the Punjab state. It has hilly terrain with structural and denudational hills with gullied and ravinous land. The Kandi region has three perennial rivers with one seasonal river. This area suffers greatly from the problem of soil erosion and active flooding along the river banks. For the identification of the severity level, remote sensing and GIS have been utilized to achieve the desired results. The drainage maps with the help of satellite data of IRS Resourcesat-1 LISS-3 have been generated. The soil erosion map is created in GIS software with the help of attribute data of soil erosion. The villages were identified in close proximity of the problems. The villages were identified by using the score card method. The villages with higher scores have a higher intensity of the problems in the physical resource base.
