ABSTRACT

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) are incurable and debilitating conditions resulting in progressive neuron loss. Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis are all common neurodegenerative disorders with no effective treatments. Flavonoids have various biological effects that may help prevent and treat NDs. Flavonoids can activate the nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2). Nrf2 regulates mitochondrial function and biogenesis and has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Nrf2 has emerged as a therapeutic target since mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation are linked to NDs. This chapter discusses the effect of flavonoid-targeted Nrf2 overexpression in preventing or slowing the aging brain and NDs.
