ABSTRACT

Neurodegenerative diseases are incurable and debilitating conditions resulting in progressive neurons loss. Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis are all common neurodegenerative disorders with no effective treatments. Flavonoids have various biological effects that may help prevent and treat neurodegenerative diseases. Flavonoids can activate the nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2. (Nrf2). Nrf2 regulates mitochondrial function and biogenesis and has antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties. Nrf2 has emerged as a therapeutic target since mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation are linked to neurodegenerative diseases. This chapter discusses the effect of flavonoid targeted Nrf2 overexpression in preventing or slowing the aging brain and neurodegenerative diseases.
