ABSTRACT

Obesity, described as an excessive amount of body fat in an individual, is one of the most apparent yet most neglected public health issues that affect both resource-rich and resource-developing countries, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2) is a basic leucine transcription factor that regulates cellular antioxidants, reduces inflammation, and helps maintain redox and metabolic balance. Studies have linked flavonoid consumption to a lower risk of stroke, cardiovascular disease, asthma, and some types of cancer. There is also evidence that dietary and herbal plant sources of flavonoids may offer potential benefits in the management of obesity and other metabolic disorders. Under ordinary physiological and pathological conditions, flavonoids are effective alimentary phytochemicals that trigger the Nrf2 pathway, potentially offering therapeutic targets in obesity. In obesity, there are increases in the amount of FFAs, ROS, and reactive nitrogen species in the bloodstream. Obesity also leads to pro-inflammatory adipokine production, immunological activation, and chronic inflammation.
