ABSTRACT

Since the introduction of Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things (IoT) and linked devices have gained greater traction than ever before. The application of IoT in smart cities is crucial, thereby creating smart grids, smart electricity meters, connected healthcare, smart waste aggregation, and management, to name a few. The world has yet to witness the power of IoT in smart cities as there are multiple impending constraints like technology evolution, infrastructure, and lack of specialized labour. Therefore, the published research has not explored this well. This chapter aims to cover the aspects where IoT plays a vital role in the smart cities and the challenges which are faced in the implementation of various connected technologies. This chapter discusses frameworks and assessment matrices which can help in the formulation of the digital layout of smart cities. Finally, this chapter discusses various uses of IoT in smart cities, thereby laying the direction for future research.
