ABSTRACT

In this chapter the various methods of skin biopsy are discussed, which is a vital component for the management of non-melanoma skin cancers. Although these procedures are usually small, the facilities, equipment and consent process are described. The types and doses of local anaesthetic used in these procedures together with contraindications are detailed There are three main procedures which are performed to obtain a histological sample for pathological analysis, punch biopsy, incisional biopsy and curettage/scoop biopsy. Pre-operative and post-operative checks are important to undertake in accordance with WHO guidance not least to avoid wrong-site surgery. The use of excisional surgery for both diagnosis and treatment which is sometimes used when the diagnosis is clear is described elsewhere.
