ABSTRACT

Essential oils are complex mixtures of volatile secondary metabolites, which are usually liquid at room temperature, sometimes solid, that are obtained from plants or herbal drugs by water/steam distillation and contain terpenic, aromatic substances, nitrogen, and sulphurous heterosides. Essential oils have their natural scent and their relaxing and healing effect has made them popular in current supportive treatments. Essential oils used in aromatherapy are obtained by distillation (water distillation, steam distillation, and water-steam distillation) and mechanical methods used for Citrus peels. Essential oils can be found in flowers, leaves, fruits, seeds, bark, rhizomes, or roots of aromatic plants. Examples of where essential oils are found are leaves (eucalyptus, medicinal mint, patchouli, and laurel), leafy branches (pine), flowers (rose and jasmine), aerial parts (thyme), stem bark (cinnamon), wood (sandalwood), roots (vetiver), rhizome (ginger), fruits (anise and juniper), fruit peel (bergamot, orange, and lemon), seeds (cardamom and coriander), and resin (frankincense) can be given.
