ABSTRACT

Crude oil-based gasoline fuels have been widely used in transportation sector since the 1920s. However, there have been great public concerns over adverse environmental and human impact of these fuels. Hence, biomass-based bioethanol fuels have increasingly been used in blending gasoline fuels and in fuel cells. Research in the field of experiences of countries has also intensified in recent years. The primary focus of research in this area has been optimization of bioethanol and biomass production and development of policies to promote production and use of bioethanol fuels worldwide. In this context, experiences of Brazil, the USA, China, and, to a lesser extent, Europe, India, Malaysia, and Colombia have been extensively studied. Further, there has been a significant focus on evaluative studies in bioethanol fuels such as techno-economic and life cycle studies. However, it is essential to develop efficient incentive structures for the primary stakeholders to enhance research in this field. Although there has been a limited number of review papers on the country experiences of bioethanol fuels, there has been no review of the 25 most-cited articles in this field. Hence, this book chapter presents a review of the 25 most-cited articles in the field of country-based experiences of bioethanol fuels. Then, it discusses the key findings of these highly influential papers and comments on future research priorities in this field.95.1 Introduction
