ABSTRACT

The project management discipline has become an essential component of the drug development project team. The complex nature of drug development requires a systematic and formalized approach to planning and executing development projects. This chapter describes the project management function generally, including key remits and points of contact the project manager has with other facets of the business. It then describes the history of project management in the biopharma industry. Then, it explores the diverse roles a project manager can have in biopharma and common career paths to lead to a project manager role. Finally, it describes future-proof competencies that will make project managers valuable assets on the team now and into the future.
