ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information on the potential medicinal pteridophytes which could serve as a promising source of medicines in the future. A total of 115 taxa from 38 genera and 21 families were identified from Turkiye. On the basis of habitat preferences of the taxa, these were grouped into either aquatic, semi-aquatic, rocky, epiphytic, terrestrial, or meadow forms. In Turkiye, only 19 pteridophyte taxa are traditionally used for medicinal purposes. These have been investigated and found useful for successfully treating various ailments, including stomachache, wounds, eczema, asthma, as diuretic, to treat kidney disorders, arteriosclerosis, rheumatism, tonsillitis, and regulation of menstrual problems. The taxa recorded here may thus serve as an important alternative medicinal source for humans.
