ABSTRACT

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become very popular in the current era due to increased data volumes, advancements in algorithms, and improving computer power and storage. The progressive transformation and quest for intelligent machines has now also paved the way for the pharmaceutical industries. AI is currently implemented in various facets of the pharmaceutical industry including manufacturing, drug discovery and development, handling clinical data, marketing, quality control, waste reduction, design optimization, process automation, and predictive forecasts. Until now leveraging these systems in the core workflow has resulted in highly efficient, cost-effective, and hassle-free business operations. Despite various challenges, such as inadequate staff skills, data structure (quality and quantity of data), and over budgeting, organizations are shifting towards AI as per their capacities. The majority of pharmaceutical industries including Merck, Roche, Pfizer, and AstraZeneca have collaborated and acquired AI. The authors highlight the application of AI in various facets of the pharmaceutical sectors along with the various tools, including machine learning and artificial neural networks, that aid implementation; they also discuss the current challenges, recent advancements, and the future prospects of AI in the transformation of the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors.
