ABSTRACT

The use of technologies in clinical practice is a reality, which has grown exponentially. Based on human relationships and our intersubjectivity, we try to look into the challenges brought about by that online intervention and to which we have to respond. The use of technology allows easy access to healthcare and enables a rigorous but sustainable practice. However, there are several aspects to take into account when designing future scenarios. We share our reflections about advantages and disadvantages, ethical and privacy questions, verbal and non-verbal communication, interdisciplinary interventions, as well as the impact on professionals and clients. In a scenario where there is a lack of legislation, and given the fact that we have been drawn by the pandemic to this ‘new’ technological world, it is necessary to quickly find a way to protect professionals and clients and achieve a positive risk–benefit relationship in this field.

Despite all the challenges, it is also necessary to address the need to provide and guarantee specific training and supervision for professionals. However, online intervention, on many occasions, must be complemented with traditional approaches.

This chapter seeks also to understand how psychology can help professionals to adapt to this new reality.
