ABSTRACT

Primary care is the essential level of sustainable universal health systems, scientifically based and in line with the best recommendations of multilateral organizations, capable of providing excellent clinical care in most situations and also operating large-scale health promotion and prevention interventions in countries where it is well implemented. However, in Brazil, as in much of Latin America, primary health care networks are the target of expansion and improvement policies, although with insufficient resources and different implementation models. In this context, the adoption of techniques, application of concepts and research in innovation management are necessary to achieve quality primary care services that are economically sustainable and available to the entire population. Aiming at understanding innovation management applied to primary health care (PHC), this study applied the integrative literature review method. The results of the research indicate that innovation management enhances changes, improvements and alternatives in the way the health service is provided to the population, serving as a basis for the formulation of public health policies.
