ABSTRACT

The plastic materials used for packaging production generate big problems for the environment, taking years to decompose, damaging the fauna and polluting the natural environment. To solve this problem a great deal of effort has been directed to the development of sustainable and biodegradable materials. Food packaging represents a large percentage of plastic waste generation, and it is of significant importance to replace it with a material that, besides being biodegradable, must provide product preservation. In view of this, food waste appears as an alternative, considering that most of them are rich in polymeric substances that form films, and can be used for the development of biodegradable packaging that is compatible with food and can also present or be increased with bioactive properties, extending the shelf life of food, improving the management of food waste and causing a positive impact on the environment nature.
