ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the applications of various functional materials for downstream offshore oil and gas industries, with a special focus on corrosion inhibitors. There are broad applications of advanced functional materials, where the development and use of improved functional materials are essential to address various operational, economic, and environmental challenges in the offshore oil and gas industries. Different functional materials were reported in the literature for a wide range of applications. This chapter mainly focuses on metal oxide, mesoporous silica, zeolite, activated carbon, and other carbon-based adsorbents for the treatment of key pollutants in the oil and gas sector like H2S and on corrosion inhibitors mainly prepared from chitosan and other plant extracts for application in offshore oil and gas facilities. This chapter also reviews other recent developments in functional materials like organoclays and nanocomposite materials and their applications in the oil and gas sector.
