ABSTRACT

Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis) gel is famous for its healing effects in treatment of different ailments, especially for gastrointestinal disorders. A. barbadensis is used for treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in the Middle East. The aim of this review is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of A. barbadensis gel in management of GERD. The results of clinical studies confirmed the efficacy and safety of A. barbadensis gel syrup (10 mL, twice daily) on clinical symptoms of GERD in comparison with omeprazole, ranitidine (n = 2), pantoprazole (n = 1), and aluminum MG (n = 1). The biological activities of A. barbadensis gel may be involved in its mechanisms of action related to its efficacy on GERD, but large clinical trials on standard products including A. barbadensis gel should be considered for future investigations.
