ABSTRACT

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is accepted as a class 1 carcinogen by the World Health Organization. H. pylori is seen in approximately 50% of the world population and additionally causes diseases like a mucosal atrophy, gastric lymphoma, and gastric carcinoma. The treatment of the H. pylori infection, antibiotics like clarithromycin and metronidazole are used. Unfortunately, treatment failures are seen because of antibiotic resistance. Therefore, research has been conducted on alternative treatment approaches based on ancient and traditional foods, plants, herbs, and spices. Thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.), a member of the Lamiaceae family, is an aromatic and medicinal plant and also known as common thyme. The essential oil and other compounds derived from the different parts of the T. vulgaris L. plant were reported to have antimicrobial effect on H. pylori. This review was aimed to collect the anti-H. pylori activities of essential oils of T. vulgaris L.
