ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief overview of the fundamentals of Internet of Things (IoT). The introduction first covers the core concept behind the automated systems, their specifications, needs, and benefits. Then it explores some common examples that can be helpful in understanding the basic idea behind the IoT. Further, it provides the historic data related to the IoT and developed systems, including the views of some founders of different computing paradigms. Then the building blocks and architectural briefing of the IoT networks will lead the readers to understand the network setup and communication systems adopted into the IoT enabled devices. Moving ahead, this chapter discusses various hardware and software technologies with some basic but very important protocols and their specifications and applications, which play a key role in developing such automated and networked systems. Never forgetting the real-world aspects, integration of the IoT world with big data analysis is discussed further, defining how cloud and fog computing facilitate the IoT system deployment at a global level. At the end, the chapter provides an introduction of Industry 4.0 and Industrial IoT for a very clear vision of the future aspects. The main aim of this chapter is to provide beginners with the basic information of the IoT domain.
