ABSTRACT

Agriculture is dependent directly on weather and indirectly on the consequences of climate change. Changes in temperature, precipitation, incoming solar radiation and CO2 concentration are expected to impact crop growth to a greater extent. Climate change is posing a great threat to agriculture and food security. All climate models predict that there will be more extreme weather conditions, with more droughts, heavy rainfall and storms in agricultural production regions. In India, climate change could be a potential threat towards food security due to population growth, industrialization and economic development. Warming of air temperature makes it possible to increase the evapotranspiration demand. Climate change will have number of effects on agriculture. Higher growing season temperatures can significantly impact agricultural productivity, farm incomes and food security. Rainfall is the major deciding factor of agriculture production. A warmer climate will accelerate the hydrologic cycle, altering rainfall, magnitude and timing of runoff.
