ABSTRACT

The convenience food industry with the state of the art technology has been proved very successful in reaching every household and have started replacing fresh and healthy foods with the processed ones. One such healthy, nutritionally balanced food is the nutritious energy bars having gained more importance and high popularity during recent years both in terms of convenience, nutritional balance occupying larger space in the consumer market. Numerous types of energy bars have been developed and are referred by different names such as protein bars, cereal bars, snack bars, diet bars, granola bars, neutraceutical bars, health bars, whole food bars, fibre bars and so on. As cereal bars are prepared using wide range of ingredients, from the nutritional point of view, these bars are classified in to 4 types such as, fibrous bars, energy bars, diet bars, protein bars. Introduction of the energy bars in mid day meal programme, will help in alleviating malnutrition in school children to larger extent.
