ABSTRACT

Increased population growth and utilization of goods and services have led to a continuous increase in energy consumption. Non-renewable sources of energy, such as fossils, continue to impact negatively on the environment, resulting in rapid greenhouse gas emissions which in turn cause resource depletion. Hence, the need for an alternative means of energy that is sustainable, environmentally friendly and affordable. A noticeable source among these is the utilization of agricultural residues (ARs) for the generation of energy such as biogas and biofuels. ARs are organic materials that are highly rich in bioactive compounds. This chapter presents various types of agricultural residues and bioenergy conversion techniques, developed in the past decades and subsequent bioenergy applications. Some environmental impact assessments are also highlighted. The chapter concludes with some prospects owing to the use of ARs towards sustainable development.
