ABSTRACT

The plant finds their importance due to presence of orange red dye in its leaves and essential oil in its flower. Oil extracted from leaves and flower called ‘Otto of henna’ which is utilized as perfume. In India, over 90 percent of the henna production comes from Sojat region of Pali district of Rajasthan and Sojat is only center for its processing and trading in India. Henna is commonly propagated in some parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat by using cuttings for hedges and by seed for commercial plantations. However, in semi-arid regions of Rajasthan the yellow flowered henna is cultivated as dye crop perhaps due to the better expression of leaf dye under such environment. Henna is easy to root species and vegetative propagation is also a problem. The cuttings collected from henna plants with three to four nodes and 10 to 15 cm length are suitable. Best time for vegetative propagation in henna is July -September.
