ABSTRACT
In the high altitude areas, the river flow in deep valley at the toe of slopes rarely serve any purpose as far as domestic water supply and irrigation are concerned and hence, agriculture in these areas is mostly rainfed. In present scenario, concept of poly-tank cum micro-irrigation system can be employed in protected cultivation. The main purpose of providing slope in the side wall is to divert the pressure of water through the side wall of the tank unless polythene sheet may be punctured, tear. Source of water of these water storage structures may be rainfall generated runoff, perennial streams, natural springs, Nalas, some time waste water from well and municipal hand pumps. Poly-tanks are less costly compared to cemented tanks and plastic tanks. The cost of construction of a poly-tank is 5-6 times less as compared to similar capacity cement tank. Estimation of adequate capacity of poly-tank as per the requirement of the irrigation is also an important aspect.
