ABSTRACT

The old and senile orchards are now reverting towards a declining trend of production because of plant age factor, non-compatible varieties and poor canopy management. In the recent past declining productivity of old and dense orchards existing in abundance has become a matter of serious concern for the orchardists, traders as well as scientists. In India 30-35 per cent area under fruit crops is occupied by old, dense and diseased orchards. As applied to the orchard tree it would mean restoring the productive capacity of the fruit trees. Hence, rejuvenation technology helps in restoring the production potential of old unproductive and seedling orchards in shortest possible duration. The term meadow literally means grassland. Analogous look of grassland covering every bit of land forms the basic for naming. This is ultra-high density planting system in which 20000-100000 plants/ha is accommodated in order to maintain tree form, severe top pruning is practised similar to mowing of grassland.
