ABSTRACT

The New Space was created by the increasing access to space by lowering the cost of putting hardware in space. Key disruptors included the advent of the CubeSat “tissue-box” satellite bus, which has decreased the time, cost, and effort of creating a working satellite. A constellation of small satellites is often preferred over one large and expensive satellite, as they can be less expensive and cover larger portions of the night sky. New Space focuses on the three R’s—reliability, repeatability, and return on investment. It is based on private companies and startups providing seed capital and not on legacy government contracts.
