ABSTRACT

India has world’s 4% of water resources for its 18% of world’s population. With growing industrialization and urbanization, need of water has increased drastically. ‘Water conservation and management’ is of incredible importance for the financial and social advancements of all. This chapter highlights the severity and endangerments it brings in India, if the issues are not considered. To save groundwater, the government has strict legal framework and effective policies against water contamination. Water contamination depends on anthropogenic activities, and hence, by effectively controlling these activities, we can save groundwater. Assessment in this study is based on analyzing legal policy framework and current scope. Legal policy framework will look into the world’s response to the issue of groundwater resource management. This study focuses on proposing, examining, exploring and analyzing the ‘National Ground Water Management Improvement Program’ of India in coherence with environmental assessment. The focus of this study lies on analyzation, identification and improvement in the program. Aquifer mapping and management along with the program capacity and performance has been assessed. Agenda of this study is to identify and bridge the gap between legal and regulatory frameworks.
