ABSTRACT

In today’s world, various technologies are evolving around healthcare like wireless sensor network, internet of things, radio frequency identification (RFID), bar code scanning, wireless body area networks using patch antennas, etc. RFID has been utilized as a technology since the early 1940s, but only in the last decade has the healthcare industry and the IT community devoted more time to research and development of technologies to meet their demands. RFID has been in use in healthcare for long. With the help of RFID, we can track inventory, identify patients, improve patient safety, perform patient monitoring, and reduce errors with regard to adverse drug effect and medication dosage. Human errors are high as staff in hospitals are already overloaded and some errors are due to negligence of staff too. RFID has the potential for monitoring, tracking, and storing read data in real time. RFID technology provides various advantages, but due to some issues like technological challenges, security, and initial cost for setup and training of staff, we still face issues in using this technology fully.
