ABSTRACT

Pleural space disease is a common cause of respiratory disease in small animal clinical practice. It is most commonly attributed to the presence of air, fluid, or tissue within the pleural cavity and is a representation of a primary disorder of the airways or systemic disease. In this chapter, the common causes of the most frequently seen pleural space disorders are reviewed. Included in this review are the causes of each condition as well as diagnostics that should be performed. Also outlined is the management for each condition, which includes both the initial stabilization and long-term management that should be used as guidelines when treating actual clinical cases.
