Introduction

In this introduction, after mentioning the importance of tunnelling in modern society, the topics discussed in this volume, concerning general tunnel layout and design, are outlined and the ‘philosophical approach’ adopted in this editorial project, of which this is the first volume, is briefly illustrated.
