ABSTRACT

With the modularization among the race, people are more concerned about healthy living. Apart from the normal diet, people in developed countries take food supplements to compensate for the nutritional deficiency. The global market provides these nutraceutical food supplements, which are mainly natural in origin. They fall into many categories, which include nutrients, probiotics, herbals, phytochemicals, prebiotics, vitamins, dietary fiber, and enzymes. Nutraceuticals as dietary supplements support healthy life by decreasing chronic disorders such as neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, stress, diabetes, and cancer. Nutraceuticals provide medical and health benefits, including disease prevention and treatment with minimal side effects. This view has moved towards the discovery and production of natural nutraceuticals to become a multi-billion industry. In this review, a list of bioactive components that are natural in origin and part of nutraceuticals will be discussed. In addition, their structural and functional aspects pertaining to their health benefits will also be summarized.
