ABSTRACT

Fruits are commonly consumed in different forms such as raw, juice, jam, jelly, etc. They are the richest sources of many vitamins and minerals. They are also rich in many biologically active compounds that have beneficial health effects. Pear is among the most common fruits cultivated in Asia and other parts of the world. It has many bioactive compounds present in it such as polyphenols, flavonoids and flavonols. It is also good in fibre. This chapter highlights the origin of pear and its classification and composition. It emphasizes different bioactive compounds present in pears and their beneficial effects, isolation and characterization. It also discusses the pharmacological applications of different bioactive compounds present in pear. This chapter aims to provide an overview of the recent advances in research done on pear species.
